The ACCC welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the development of a new aviation White Paper. A competitive airline sector is vital to meet the needs of consumers and the economy more broadly, especially for a large country as geographically dispersed as Australia. Rivalry between airlines can deliver more routes, a greater choice of products, cheaper airfares, more reliable services and better customer service. On many of these measures, international air passenger services to and from Australia generally delivered improved outcomes in the years leading up to the pandemic.

In October of 2021, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) members committed that the aviation industry would reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. With the finish line of this commitment sitting at 2050, this race to net zero is more a marathon than a sprint.

If you travel a lot for work, then you’ll know about airline reward schemes. These programmes encourage travellers to book again and again with the same airline, collect loyalty points and exchange them for benefits such as discounted fares and free upgrades. But did you also know that in addition to these frequent flyer schemes for individuals, there are also airline reward schemes for companies? These corporate reward schemes are a great way to maximise the value of your company’s travel spend, while benefitting your travellers at the same time.

This report outlines a holistic view of pathways to a sustainable aviation ecosystem, focusing on low-net-carbon aircraft energy carriers (fuels), airport ecosystems (airports and bases), and developments in sustainable aircraft components (aircraft). Taking this holistic ecosystem perspective, we identify critical components that contribute to sustainable energy solutions necessary to achieve deep decarbonization of the aviation industry, as well as the integrated energy system interfaces that must be comprehensively understood, planned for, and realized. Further, we outline necessary R&D needs to achieve sustainability across the aviation ecosystem, including advancing breakthrough innovations to rapidly achieve scalable solutions, with attention to their cross-sectoral dependencies and implications.

Air transport plays a vital role in economies. The number of flights increased by approximately 38% between 2010 and 20191 and is still expected to resume a strong long-term growth globally despite the COVID-19 crisis2 , albeit below 2019 levels for the years to come. This can mainly be attributed to strong forecasted growth in developing countries3 , especially in middle class populations, driving the need and market for greater local and global connectivity within these regions.
