BAE Systems provides enhanced GPS technology for F-15 Eagle fighters
BAE Systems has received a $13 million contract for advanced Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to protect U.S. F-15E aircraft from GPS signal jamming and spoofing. The company’s Digital GPS Anti-jam Receiver (DIGAR) will ensure the reliability of military GPS systems for aircraft operating in challenging signal environments.DIGAR uses advanced antenna electronics, high-performance signal-processing, and digital beamforming – a capability that combines 16 steered beams – for better GPS signal reception and superior jamming immunity. These capabilities are critical for high-speed aircraft as they maneuver through the battlespace. The F-15 Eagle is the second U.S. Air Force fighter platform to receive DIGAR GPS upgrades, following the F-16 Fighting Falcon. DIGAR also provides advanced GPS capabilities for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft as well as multiple unmanned aerial vehicles.

BAE Systems’ family of military GPS products offer size, weight, and power characteristics suitable for a variety of applications, including handheld electronics, vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, and precision-guided munitions. In addition to GPS Anti-Jam products, the company is currently delivering advanced GPS products compatible with the next-generation M-Code satellite signal, and is developing the next generation of receivers to ensure dependable GPS for warfighters across land, air, and sea domains.
BAE Systems work on military GPS technology takes place in Cedar Rapids, where the company is investing more than $100 million to build a 278,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art research and manufacturing center.

Archer Selects Molicel to Supply Battery Cells for its Production Midnight™ Aircraft

Archer Aviation Inc., a leader in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, and E-One Moli Energy Corp. (Molicel), an industry-leading supplier of lithium-ion battery cells, today announced they have entered into a memorandum of understanding for Molicel to manufacture and supply the battery cells for Archer’s production electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Midnight. Archer is focused on building an aircraft tailored to the needs of intra-city travel, optimizing its Midnight aircraft to perform back-to-back short distance flights of about 20 miles with approximately 10-minute charging cycles in-between. Batteries are an important consideration in achieving Midnight’s desired payload, range and charging time. The ability to operate eVTOL aircraft in dense, urban environments requires state-of-the-art, reliable battery cells that can deliver high power, low impedance and fast charging capabilities. Molicel’s advanced battery technology and fast growing production capacity make them an ideal partner for Archer as it continues on its ramp to commercialization. Last year, Molicel announced plans to establish its first Gigafactory in Taiwan, which is scheduled to ramp up production in 2023. The facility will have the capacity to produce 1.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery capacity annually. Molicel's high-performance cells also offer a significant cycle life when utilized in Archer's battery pack and, as a result, reduce the long-term operating cost for its Midnight production aircraft. Stellantis to Jointly Manufacture Archer’s Electric Aircraft

In a recent announcement, automotive and mobility major, Stellantis N.V. to further its partnership with Archer Aviation Inc to jointly manufacture, Archer’s state-of-the-art electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Midnight. Midnight aircraft will be manufactured in Archer’s new production plant in Covington, Georgia, from 2024. Midnight is designed to be safe, sustainable, and silent, with an anticipated payload of more than 1,000 pounds. Midnight has a range of 100 miles, which makes it ideal for back-to-back travels of under 20 miles, carrying up to 4 passengers and a pilot, with an interval of about 10 minutes for charging. Stellantis brings its manufacturing expertise, resources, skills and knowledge, while Archer gets its world-class engineering team, eVTOL, electric powertrain and certification experts. This alliance dramatically boosts urban air mobility as Archer hopes to fulfill its commercialization goals by scaling up aircraft production quickly. At the same time, Archer hopes to strengthen its route to commercialization by avoiding spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the manufacturing ramp-up phase. Boom Supersonic Starts Overture Superfactory's Construction in North Carolina

On January 26, 2023, the creators of one of the world's fastest airliners, Boom Supersonic, started constructing its Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Overture Superfactory, located on a 62-acre campus at the Piedmont Triad International Airport, is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. For the Boom's flagship supersonic airliner, Overture's 62-acre site will house the final assembly, test facility and customer delivery center. The company will hire more than 2,400 people to work at the Superfactory by 2032, and the hiring process has already started. The estimation made by North Carolina's economists states that the complete Boom manufacturing program will improve the state's economy by $32.3 billion in 20 years. Adding to the job creation, the company is creating 200+ internships for students from public universities, community colleges and trade schools in North Carolina to develop the next generation of supersonic workers. Boom selected the location of North Carolina for the Overture aircraft purposely to utilize the large skilled talent pool, exceptional access to universities, community colleges and technical schools, closeness to the Eastern Seaboard for testing supersonic flights over water and proximity to several top aerospace suppliers. Also, the statistics of North Carolina show the three times faster growth of the state in the aerospace manufacturing sector than the national average in the past few years. Boom will focus on the construction of the Overture Superfactory for this year. The construction will involve BE&K Building Group and BRPH, the design partner.
