CAE will Invest $1 billion in Innovation Over the Next Five Years to Develop Future Aviation Technologies
CAE stated today that it will invest C$1 billion in innovation over the next five years. The investment will go toward Project Resilience, a transformation project aimed at developing tomorrow's technologies, such as digitally immersive solutions based on data ecosystems and artificial intelligence in civil aviation, defense and security, and healthcare. CAE will also be able to position itself as a leader in end-to-end technology, operational support, and training solutions for Advanced Air Mobility and create green light aircraft technologies as a result of the project.

In collaboration with the Government of Canada and Québec, the initiative will enable CAE to play a major role in making air travel safer, preparing defense forces for missions, and assisting medical professionals in saving lives.

The governments of Canada and Québec will invest a total of C$340 million over the next five years (C$190 million for Canada and C$150 million for Québec).

CAE will use its unique technological capabilities, long-standing expertise in supporting airworthiness test programs, latest innovations in simulation, virtual/mixed reality (VR/MR), and data analytics to position itself at the forefront of disruptive mobility technologies eVTOL vehicles.

CAE will invest in developing electric aircraft technology and solutions as part of the initiative, including upgrading its vast fleet of light trainer aircraft to reduce its carbon footprint. On September 28, 2020, CAE announced that it had become the first Canadian aerospace business to achieve carbon neutrality.

Job creation and investment in future talent

CAE will carry out Project Resilience in Canada, using its R&D labs, test and integration facilities, and training facilities. Throughout Project Resilience, CAE will collaborate and co-develop technological solutions with small and medium-sized businesses from throughout Canada, creating 700 new highly skilled jobs in Canada, 600 of which will be in Quebec. In addition, CAE will collaborate with post-secondary institutions, research centers, and STEM institutes to generate 5,000 Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities for students and 100 new scholarship jobs via this initiative.

CAE employs over 11,000 people worldwide, with about half of them located at 18 locations throughout Canada.

The government's investments are subject to the completion of formal agreements.

The investments in Project Resilience are in line with CAE's existing R&D investment pace.

Honeywell And Wood Introduce Groundbreaking Technologies To Support Efforts Toward Carbon-Neutral Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Honeywell and Wood announced a comprehensive package of technologies to support the effort to produce carbon-neutral aviation fuel. When used together, the technologies, which are based on Honeywell's UOP Ecofining process technology and Wood's hydrogen plant technology, could reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 100% using certain feedstocks when compared to traditional petroleum aviation fuel. The UOP Ecofining process technology converts waste oils, fats, and greases into Honeywell Green Jet FuelTM, a drop-in replacement for jet fuel. When using a feedstock such as used cooking oils, lifecycle GHG emissions can be reduced by 80% at this stage compared to conventional petroleum jet fuel. As the next step in enhancing the Ecofining process technology offering, Wood's technology will be integrated to use the byproducts of the UOP Ecofining process technology to produce renewable hydrogen, reducing lifecycle GHG emissions a further 10% when compared to the total GHG emissions produced by conventional petroleum jet fuel. The renewable hydrogen is then injected back into the Honeywell Ecofining process to remove feed impurities and create a cleaner burning renewable fuel. The carbon dioxide (CO2) that is generated from the production of the hydrogen can be captured and routed for permanent underground sequestration using the Honeywell H2 Solutions technology suite, further reducing lifecycle GHG emissions an additional 10% when compared to the total GHG emissions produced by conventional petroleum jet fuel. The combination of technologies results in an aviation fuel that is effectively carbon neutral compared to petroleum fuels. The combination of these technologies from Honeywell and Wood greatly reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional fuels by using byproducts to provide hydrogen for the Ecofining process. As a result, a renewable fuels refinery can be essentially self-sustaining in hydrogen production while reducing the carbon intensity of the renewable fuels to very low levels. - Ben Owens, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Sustainable Technology Solutions. Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other federal government agencies worked together to introduce the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge with a goal to produce 3 billion gallons per year of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 in the U.S. If those 3 billion gallons of SAF were produced using Honeywell's comprehensive package of technologies, it could result in the equivalent of 34 million metric tons of cumulative carbon dioxide avoided per year, depending on the oil and fat feedstock mix used. The UOP Ecofining process has been used for commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel since 2016 by World Energy in California. The facility remains the only 100% renewable jet fuel unit in the world. The Ecofining technology is used in most 100%-biofeed units producing renewable diesel and all the licensed renewable jet fuel production in the world today.
