Elbit Systems UK JV introduces sustainable aviation pathfinder for Ministry of Defence

Elbit Systems | April 18, 2022

Sustainable Aviation
Elbit Systems UK and KBR Inc's joint venture, Affinity Flying Training Services Ltd (Affinity), has embarked on a series of battery-powered flight tests for the UK Ministry of Defence to assess the feasibility of environmentally friendly alternatives to current military aircraft.

The concept of trialling zero emissions aircraft, and the subsequent pathfinder, was brought to the Ministry of Defence by Elbit Systems UK through its joint venture with KBR Inc, Affinity. The introduction of this pathfinder demonstrates the company's commitment to providing innovative solutions for the UK Armed Forces and addressing the needs of the future.

In line with the Ministry of Defence's 'green' transformation, the flights aim to help the Royal Air Force (RAF) assess the technology of electric aircraft, determine its effectiveness as an impactful pilot training capability and realise the net-zero ambitions of the service's ASTRA initiative.

The flights used a fully certified two-seater pilot training aircraft, the Velis Electro. Flight and safety assurances were developed during the summer of 2021, which was organised and delivered by the team from Elbit Systems UK, through Affinity, in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority.

The pathfinder programme was split into three phases. As part of Phase 1 in December 2021, test flights took off from Damyn's Hall, Essex, and continued into January 2022. Phase 2 commenced in March 2022, and saw the aircraft join Affinity's existing fleet at RAF Cranwell, where up to twenty additional pilots will fly the eco-friendly aircraft. Finally, Phase 3 of the flight trials will welcome senior government officials and observers.

"We are delighted to be leading this exciting initiative with the Ministry of Defence. The concept of zero emissions aircraft being utilised by the RAF has always been considered hypothetical and we are proud to have proposed and delivered initial capability for this pathfinder. Elbit Systems UK has always been, and continues to be, at the forefront of advances in the Defence industry, supporting our Armed Forces as they address the requirements of tomorrow."

Gilmour Space and Atomos Space Signs MOU for Space Transport

Gilmour Space Technologies | February 28, 2023

On February 27, 2023, Gilmour Space Technologies and Atomos Space announced signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore a multiyear contract between Gilmour and Atomos for the mutual purchase of launch and space transportation services. The partnership between Gilmour Space Technologies and Atomos Space will entail Atomos contracting Gilmour for launch services on its Eris and upcoming orbital launch vehicles. Moreover, Atomos' Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTVs) will offer customers in-space transportation services and launch aggregation services for multiple customer spacecraft to be launched on Gilmour vehicles. Atomos Space solves the problem of entry barriers for a satellite to enter space and difficult-to-reach orbits access by providing in-space transportation and orbit-raising services to satellites. In contrast to similar systems currently in development, Atomos' OTVs reside in space and rendezvous with client satellites in orbit. This allows the full launch volume and mass to be reserved for the cost reduction to customers, payload and enables launch vehicles like Eris to be used for a more expansive variety of missions. Adam Gilmour, CEO of Gilmour Space Technologies, said, "This new agreement with Atomos is an exciting opportunity for Gilmour." He added, "We look forward to exploring the possibility of leveraging Atomos's orbital transfer capabilities to expand our services and the flexibility of access to space to new markets and customers." (Source – Cision PR Newswire) About Gilmour Space Technologies Founded in 2013, Gilmour Space Technologies is one of the leading companies that develop and launch reliable vehicles and satellite platforms for customers worldwide. Innovative Eris orbital launch vehicles from Gilmour Space will deliver up to 305 kg to LEO, with the first commercial launch scheduled for early 2023. Since launching its rocket program in 2015, the company has become the leading provider of Australian-made launch vehicles and satellite platforms to reduce the cost of space access.

Blade Air Mobility and BETA Technologies Mark the First Piloted EVA Test in New York

AIR TRANSPORT | February 15, 2023

On February 14, 2023, Blade Air Mobility, Inc., an air mobility platform powered by technology, and BETA Technologies EVA developer and an electric aerospace company, announced the successful completion of BETA's ALIA-250 EVA test flight in White Plains, New York, at the Westchester County Airport. This flight is essential in the companies' ongoing collaboration to provide commuters and commercial customers with safe, quiet, and environmentally friendly air transportation in the greater New York City area. An all-electric propulsion system aircraft ALOA-250 is made for urban use with vertical takeoff and landing capability and noise levels that are only 1/10th as loud as those of regular helicopters. The aircraft can carry up to six people and has a sleek, modern design with several safety and comfort features. To demonstrate the significant reduction in noise during the test flight, the ALIA-250 followed a conventional helicopter for a portion of the journey, then separated for a second pass over the airport. In April 2021, Blade and BETA signed a deal allowing Blade's network of operators to buy up to 20 of BETA's first ALIA-250 aircraft with passenger configuration. Blade plans to use its first fleet of aircraft on routes within its US-based network of dedicated terminals. Additionally, BETA has agreed to provide and install charging infrastructure at strategic locations. BETA has demonstrated a strong performance with its two full-scale prototype aircraft by accomplishing significant milestones over the past three years toward certification and commercialization. Testing pilots from the United States Air Force and Army flew the ALIA-250 in full-pattern evaluations in March and July of 2022, respectively, making these flights the first manned qualitative evaluations of electric vertical aircraft in the industry. About Blade Air Mobility Founded in 2014, Blade Air Mobility is a technology-powered, global platform committed to providing cost-effective air transportation alternatives to routes frequently used by millions of people every day, including those in the United States, Europe, Canada, and India. The Company's passenger routes are primarily serviced by helicopters and amphibious aircraft, and it is one of the most extensive air medical transporters of human organs for transplant. Its asset-light business model, coupled with its exclusive passenger terminal infrastructure, is intended to facilitate an easy transition to Electric Vertical Aircraft ("EVA" or "eVTOL"), enabling emission-free, low-cost air mobility for the public. About BETA Technologies An electric aerospace company, BETA Technologies, is creating a new standard for transporting people and goods, making it safer, quieter, greener, and more efficient. To support a variety of EVs, it is constructing an electric transportation system consisting of net-zero, all-electric plane and a cross-country, multimodal charging infrastructure. The Company was founded in 2012, and its headquarters is in South Burlington, Vermont. The BETA platform and products are remarkably straightforward. A focus on safety and a pragmatic approach to certification motivate elegant redundancy, appropriate implementation diversity, and precise control.
