Lilium, NetJets And FlightSafety International Partner To Grow Sustainability In Private Aviation

NetJets Inc., the largest private aviation company in the world, and FlightSafety International, the leader in professional aviation training have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lilium N.V. (“Lilium”), makers of an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jet, for a proposed strategic partnership. The arrangement would provide NetJets with the right to purchase up to 150 Lilium aircraft, introducing more options to NetJets owners to complement their existing flight patterns. NetJets also anticipates supporting Lilium with a private sales campaign for individuals to purchase Lilium aircraft. In addition, the two companies will explore a business model for the operation of Lilium’s network in Florida as well as other regions in the US and Europe.

The Lilium Jet’s flexible cabin architecture is expected to enable a range of configurations, including configurations with four to six passenger layouts that address both premium and shuttle mission profiles. 

NetJets operates the world’s largest fleet of private jets, and their strong owner base will provide Lilium with scale and support for its ecosystem in the US, where plans for a Florida transport hub continue to progress.

This planned collaboration with NetJets is also expected to boost Lilium’s commercial ambitions in Florida and other US markets and would create supplemental direct sales opportunities. The Lilium Jet, which offers high performance with zero operating emissions, will allow NetJets to advance its sustainability efforts by offering its customer base regional transportation alternatives.  

As part of the arrangement, Lilium would also partner with FlightSafety International Inc. to provide products and services, such as courseware, industry leading immersive and mixed reality training devices and crew training to support Lilium Jet operations. FlightSafety’s proprietary training software will deliver flexible and agile learning solutions needed to support the advance air mobility market.

Wind River Supports Airbus for A3R Refueling Boom Operations Certification

Wind River® is a mission-critical intelligent software system provider, recently announced it has worked with Airbus to support the Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) A330 aircraft for A3R automatic air-to-air refueling. The MRTT aircraft is one of the world's first tankers certified for automated air-to-air refueling boom operations in daylight. VxWorks 653 is being used by Airbus for the A330 MRTT ARBS (air-to-air refueling boom system). It comprises multiple ARINC-653-compliant applications that operate at various safety-critical levels and accomplished DO-178C DAL A certification. Using the platform, it has proven to be a safety-critical application in the most challenging situations. Furthermore, meeting stringent safety certification requirements of IEC 61508, EN 50128, ISO 26262, and ED-12C / DO-178C, VxWorks 653 makes it easier and cost-effective for technology suppliers. The development helped the Airbus A330 MRTT A3R capability to be certified by the Spanish National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA). It also includes multiple DO-178C DAL A/ED-12C applications running at the same time on multiple cores on a multicore processor. With the automated A3R system, more efficient operation, low air fueling operator workload, a low inherent risk of operation and the rate of air-to-air refueling transfer optimization are enabled. In addition, advanced technologies in A3R can recognize the shape of the receiving aircraft, a refueling receptacle, then perform fuel transfer and automated contact while flying at a high altitude. Universal Hydrogen Successfully Tests First Hydrogen-Propelled Flight

Universal Hydrogen Co. is developing a hydrogen logistics network to power aviation in the future. The company recently completed flying a 40-passenger regional airliner using hydrogen fuel cell propulsion. Lightning McClean (nickname of the flight) took off from Grant County International Airport (KMWH) and flew for 15 minutes at 8:41 AM PST, reaching 3,500 meters above mean sea level (MSL). The airplane was the first flight in a two-year flight test campaign under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate. A two-year flight test campaign is anticipated to culminate in 2025 by introducing hydrogen-powered ATR 72 regional aircraft into passenger service. Connect Airlines and Amelia, respectively, the US and European launch customers for the hydrogen airplanes were present to witness the historic flight. In addition, the company has a rapidly expanding order book, which currently consists of 247 aircraft conversions from 16 customers globally, summing to more than $1 billion in conversions backlog and more than $2 billion in fuel services over the first ten years of operation. During this first test flight, one of the aircraft's turbine engines was replaced with a fuel cell-electric, megawatt-class powertrain from Universal Hydrogen. The company's powertrain is based on the ProGen family of aviation-modified fuel cells from Plug Power. The unique feature of the design is that the powertrain uses fuel cells to drive the electric motor directly, drastically reducing weight and cost instead of using the battery. Everett-based magniX provided the engine, a modified magni650 electric propulsion unit, and the power electronics. In addition, Seattle-based AeroTEC helped with engineering work, such as designing the modified nacelle structure, developing and integrating aircraft systems, making changes to the flight test aircraft, and installing the Universal Hydrogen powertrain.
