Norway's air navigation service provider, Avinor ANS, has started using Aireon's market-leading space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data from this month to back air traffic operations through the entire Bodø Oceanic Flight Information Region (OFIR).
Avinor ANS began using Aireon ADS-B data below FL 100 for the Bodø OFIR in oceanic environments in April 2022 with the primary goal of providing robust helicopter operations, rescue, and search missions in the Barents Sea. Since then, Avinor ANS has reported that the Aireon space-based ADS-B improved safety and drive operational efficiencies in the region, as well as the ability to lower separation for helicopters. Furthermore, Avinor concluded that space-based ADS-B outperformed ground-based systems in terrestrial airspace.
Avinor ANS for high-level oceanic airspace within the Bodø OFIR will now use the Aireon data to enhance traffic visibility and ATC awareness. Using Aireon data, the ANSP will start to shorten the distance between planes in the corridor to the Svalbard Islands. Eventually, they want to shorten the distance between aircraft in the whole Bodø OFIR.
Avinor is a state-owned limited company under the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications. It oversees 43 airports owned by the state and three control centers, and travel support for around 50 million passengers yearly. The Bodø OFIR covers the Norwegian Basin and the Barents Sea.
About Aireon LLC
Founded in 2012, Aireon LLC has deployed a global space-based air traffic surveillance system for aircraft equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B). The company is utilizing next-generation aviation surveillance technologies that were formerly ground-based. For the first time, it is extending its reach globally to enhance safety, reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and provide cost savings benefits to all stakeholders; it is going global for the first time to increase safety, improve efficiency, lower emissions, and help everyone save money. Aieron's headquarters is in McLean, Virginia, and it is in partnership with leading ANSPs worldwide.
