Electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle company, Overair, announced its most recent funding of $145 million from Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Aerospace, global leaders in ultra-precision communications and aircraft technologies. With this new investment, Overair remains on track to fly its all-electric experimental prototype in the second half of 2023.
Hanwha's continued investment in Overair not only fuels the ongoing development of Butterfly but will also allow Overair to lay the groundwork for commercializing their mobility technology. In addition to their investment, Hanwha will also provide electric motors and battery packs for Overair's prototypes, as the two companies expand their R&D co-operation.

Butterfly is an all-electric aircraft with six seats designed to take off and land vertically. The aircraft's advanced propulsion system is derived from decades of military VTOL programs led by Abe Karem. Thanks to this legacy of proprietary engineering, Butterfly's propulsion is extremely efficient and will give Butterfly the broadest flight envelope and smallest sound footprint of any aircraft in the burgeoning industry. Specifically, Butterfly's unique Optimum Speed Propulsion (OSP) uses four large propellers, which spin slowly when hovering and even slower when cruising, and draw only a fraction of the available motor power, giving Butterfly extra payload capacity and power margins to operate safely in challenging environmental conditions. Additionally, the slow-turning props produce extraordinarily little sound, which will allow Butterfly to operate in high-density areas with noise sensitive communities.

As the company continues to work toward FAA certification, Overair is also working with NASA and Urban Movement Labs in Los Angeles to develop urban air mobility (UAM) routing and infrastructure.

The Nordic Air Racing Team, an official Air Race E team, successfully completed the world's first flight of an all-electric racing plane – the plane was designed and engineered with the help of Ansys (NASDAQ: ANSS) simulation solutions. As the official simulation software partner of Air Race E, Ansys enables teams to overcome some of the key engineering challenges of fully electric flight.
Air Race E, the world's first and only all-electric airplane racing championship, is a competitive platform that will accelerate the development of more electric and fully electric propulsion for aerospace applications. These technological advancements are critical for the aviation industry as companies and countries around the world work to reduce carbon emissions — especially those related to travel.
The competing teams are racing to prove their planes are airworthy in advance of the official Air Race E series, which launches in 2023. The Nordic Air Racing Team used Ansys software along with the Ansys Learning Hub, and collaborated with Ansys technical experts to reduce the overall project lead time by 40%.

Engineers on The Nordic Air Racing Team used Ansys multiphysics simulation solutions as they retrofitted a piston engine racing aircraft with an electric powertrain. Ansys was also used to modify the nose of the plane, optimize the center of gravity, air cooling system and aerodynamics, and develop the composite motor compartment.
"Ansys simulations made us feel extremely confident about our aircraft and shortened the timeline to achieving our first flight, I was surprised to see how Ansys software can integrate each and every parameter requirement for a system as complex as our battery. The Nordic Air Racing Team is one of seven official teams currently registered to compete in Air Race E. The official racing series involves up to eight small propeller airplanes taking off simultaneously, flying at 30 feet at speeds of 250 mph. It is the only motorsport of its kind.

easyJet, Europe's leading airline, has chosen SkyBreathe®, an advanced eco-flying solution to reduce the fuel burn and thus CO2 emissions of their fleet, as part of their ambition to reduce their carbon footprint from flying across Europe.
Most aviation emissions come from fuel consumption and the resulting carbon emissions. SkyBreathe® is an innovative eco-flying solution developed by OpenAirlines. It is based on Cloud, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data and enables airlines to save fuel and reduce their carbon footprint by up to 5%.
Under the agreement, the fuel management software will automatically collect and analyze the data from the 300+ aircraft operated by easyJet and combine them with data from other sources, including payload, weather conditions, maintenance, flight paths, and Air Traffic Control.
The solution will identify the most relevant fuel saving opportunities and generate actionable insights shared with all stakeholders through synthetic and easy-to-read dashboards. Based on this information, the airline will benefit from a thorough understanding of its operations. The solution allows for the implementation of the most efficient procedures on the ground (pushback, taxi, takeoff, turnaround, etc.) and during flight (climb, cruise, approach, landing, etc.) to maximize carbon reduction.
