Flight Safety Foundation Urges Collaboration on Safe Implementation of 5G

Flight Safety Foundation strongly encourages the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to work together to develop a plan that enables the safe and efficient implementation of 5G mobile communications services in the C-Band. It is critical to fully understand and mitigate potential 5G signal interference with radio altimeters that are integral to aircraft safety systems. Activation of these services currently is scheduled for Jan. 5.

The FAA's recent airworthiness directives (ADs) would restrict the use of approach and landing procedures during low visibility conditions. Other safety-critical features such as aircraft and obstacle collision avoidance systems also depend on reliable radio altimeter performance. The Foundation is concerned about the possible unintended consequences of not having full safety enhancement system capabilities available to pilots and about the considerable efforts to develop and communicate the mitigations to all segments of the aviation sector. These restrictions will adversely impact different aviation operations, including helicopter emergency medical services.

The Foundation believes that 5G and aviation can safely co-exist, but it is going to take a collaborative approach on the part of FAA and FCC, and stakeholders in the aviation and telecommunications industries, to resolve outstanding issues.

SATAVIA partners with AirCarbon Exchange in plan to conduct world's first carbon trade arising from aviation's non-CO2 impacts

SATAVIA and AirCarbon Exchange (ACX) are delighted to announce an historic partnership, combining world-leading tech with pioneering commodities infrastructure to support trading of carbon credits generated by SATAVIA's unique contrail prevention technology. Aircraft-generated condensation trails, or contrails, account for up to 60% of aviation's climate impact, almost double that of direct CO2 emissions from aircraft engines. By engaging in contrail prevention activity, eco-conscious operators like Etihad will now be able to generate commercial returns from climate-friendly operations, helping to support commercially sustainable green aviation. "Credits are already available to offset aviation's direct CO2 emissions, but direct emissions only account for about a third of the sector's climate impact," said SATAVIA CEO, Adam Durant. Wisk Aero Secures $450 Million from The Boeing Company to Advance Certified Autonomous Electric Flight

Honeywell has been selected to provide its new HTS7500 turboshaft engine as the power behind the Lockheed Martin Sikorsky-Boeing DEFIANT X® helicopter, currently a contender to win the U.S. Army's Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) competition. The HTS7500 turboshaft engine is the newest and most technologically advanced model in Honeywell's family of military engines, which includes the iconic T55 engine that has powered the H-47 fleet for over 60 years. Like the T55, the HTS7500 is a highly reliable engine designed to thrive in austere environments and to perform to keep military personnel safer.
