United Airlines Invests in Battery-Maker Natron Energy With Eye Toward Further Electrifying Ground Operations

United Airlines | December 01, 2022

United Airlines today announced a strategic equity investment in Natron Energy, a battery manufacturer whose sodium-ion batteries have the potential to help United electrify its airport ground equipment like pushback tractors and operations at the gate. United has made substantial investments in companies developing technology to reduce aircraft emissions, but Natron is the first that has the potential to reduce the greenhouse gas footprint from United's ground operations. United Airlines Ventures was created to identify companies spearheading the next generation of innovative and emissions-reducing technology,Out of the gate, we primarily focused on technology designed to help reduce carbon emissions from our airplanes. Natron's cutting-edge sodium-ion batteries presented an ideal opportunity to both potentially expand our sustainability investment portfolio to our ground operations, and to help make our airport operations more resilient. United is looking forward to future opportunities to work with our airport partners on sustainable technology initiatives. Michael Leskinen, President of United Airline Ventures. United has more than 12,000 pieces of motorized ground equipment across its operations, of which about one third are currently electric. Natron's batteries could potentially be deployed in support of a number of uses, including: Charging electric ground equipment Charging anticipated future electric aircraft such as electric air taxis Allowing airport operations to manage electricity demand Greatly improving resiliency related to inclement weather "Natron's sodium-ion batteries will help the aviation industry achieve its decarbonization and EV goals,Our batteries provide the high power over short distances that ground service equipment needs, and unlike lithium-ion, Natron's batteries are completely nonflammable and can be safely deployed into ground service operations." Colin Wessells, CEO of Natron Energy. The sodium-ion batteries contain several features that distinguish them from existing battery technology. In addition to better output and cycle life than their lithium counterparts, testing performed by an independent testing service has shown these batteries to be nonflammable, a critical safeguard for the high usage and power that would be required for certain operations. The minerals used in sodium-ion batteries are abundant worldwide and are easily sourced, unlike lithium which is in short supply with demand expected to triple by 2025. Natron plans to use the funds to accelerate production at its manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan, where it will scale operations to begin mass production of UL-listed sodium-ion batteries in 2023. Launched in 2021, UAV is a first-of-its-kind sustainability-focused ventures fund that targets startups, upcoming technologies, and concepts that will complement United's goal of net zero emissions by 2050 – without relying on traditional carbon offsets such as planting trees. UAV's portfolio now includes SAF producers and other technologies including carbon utilization, hydrogen-electric engines, electric regional aircraft, and urban air mobility. About United United's shared purpose is "Connecting People. Uniting the World." From our U.S. hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., United operates the most comprehensive global route network among North American carriers. BNDES finances Embraer's aircraft production for export

Embraer | November 15, 2022

The Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved financing to Embraer S.A. (B3: EMBR3, NYSE: ERJ) for producing and exporting commercial aircraft manufactured by the company. The operation, in the order of R$ 2.2 billion (US$ 400 million), will be carried out through the BNDES Exim Pre-shipment, a direct bank credit line to produce national goods destined for export. BNDES operation reinforces the US$ 650 million revolving credit funding recently announced by Embraer with a foreign financial institutions group. The financing consummation is subject, among others, to the fulfillment of previous conditions established by BNDES and the execution of the respective contract. "Credit operations are important for the resumption of aircraft production by Embraer at pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels and reinforce the strategic partnership between BNDES and Embraer started in 1997, consolidating BNDES support to the aeronautical industry and the export of Brazilian aircraft," Bruno Aranha, director of BNDES. "The longevity of the partnership between Embraer and BNDES illustrates the strength of this relationship that stimulates Brazilian exports and benefits society. Together with other actions that we are carrying out with Brazilian and international financial institutions, this operation reinforces our credibility for access to financial resources that will contribute to executing our growth plan," said Antonio Carlos Garcia, CFO of Embraer. The aviation sector is considered strategic due to the high technology involved, the employment of qualified labor, and the ability to generate innovations with positive impacts on the country's economy, in addition to being a relevant industry for guaranteeing national sovereignty through Defense products. Brazil is a country that can design, manufacture, and export Commercial, Executive, Defense, and Agricultural aircraft worldwide. Since 1997, when BNDES began to support Embraer, the bank has financed approximately US$ 25 billion in exports of the company's aircraft, enabling the export of more than 1,275 units to airlines around the world. During the period, the contracted operations enabled the Brazilian manufacturer to compete in the foreign market on equal terms with its competitors. About BNDES Founded in 1952 and currently linked to the Ministry of the Economy, BNDES is the main instrument used by Brazil's Federal Government to promote long-term investments in the Brazilian economy. Its actions focus on socio-environmental and economic impacts in Brazil. The bank offers special conditions for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, as well as social investment credit lines for education and healthcare, family agriculture, basic sanitation, and urban transport. In crisis situations, the bank acts in an anticyclical manner and assists in formulating solutions for the resumption of economic growth. About Embraer A global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil, Embraer has businesses in Commercial and Executive aviation, Defense & Security and Agricultural Aviation. The company designs, develops, manufactures and markets aircraft and systems, providing after-sales service and support to customers.
