UK aviation industry commits to net zero target

Buying Business Travel | February 05, 2020

The UK aviation industry has united behind a commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 as part of a drive to combat the growing climate crisis. The Sustainable Aviation coalition said the goal is based on a review of the opportunities to cut the industry’s emissions and forms part of its new “Decarbonisation Road Map: A Path to Net Zero”, which was published on 4 February. The road map sets out where such reductions can come from, including through more efficient flight operations, new aircraft and engine technology, modernising the UK’s airspace, the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAVs) and high-quality, market-based policy measures.

Shield AI awarded max AFWERX STRATFI contract focused on operational, intelligent swarming aircraft and eVTOL autonomy

Shield AI | January 28, 2022

Shield AI, the aviation autonomy company using self-driving software to enable collaborative teams of unmanned aircraft to operate in GPS- and RF-denied environments, today announced that it has been awarded the maximum amount through the Air Force's Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) Program, in conjunction with Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), to accelerate the integration of its combat-proven Hivemind™ autonomy software into various military and commercial platforms. "We're fired up – this program is centerline with our mission to advance U.S. core values by providing DoD with leading technology. We believe the operational products that will result from this program are fundamental to national security and global stability. This program will lead to operational intelligent swarming capabilities and is also a first step towards the integration of our Hivemind™ autonomy stack on commercial electric Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft, or eVTOLs. The AI and autonomy engineering for this program is at the cutting edge… it's a really awesome thing to work on," - Brandon Tseng, Shield AI cofounder and former Navy SEAL. The STRATFI program leverages the capabilities of promising private companies, whose technologies have the potential to make a positive impact for personnel serving in the U.S. Air Force, Space Force, and other branches of the U.S. military. Through a rigorous application process, STRATFI identifies companies that consistently meet Department of Defense (DoD) requirements and are positioned to win multiple programs of record. "AFWERX is committed to quickly scaling in a way that helps our Airmen, and in this case, Soldiers, field emerging technologies that support key operational capabilities. Finding strong AI companies that can bring that capability to the operator will continue to be a key thrust area," - Col. Nathan P. Diller, AFWERX Director. The advancement of Hivemind™ supports the concept of AI for Small Unit Maneuver (AISUM), as outlined in AFSOC's "Big 5" innovation initiatives. The AISUM capabilities achieved via this STRATFI effort provide the Air Force and other services the ability to employ teams of highly intelligent Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to operate in highly contested domains. "The AFWERX STRATFI with Shield AI will advance the autonomous collaboration capabilities of AFSOC's UAS enabling them to team with Air Commandos in complex environments. Human-machine teaming is a critical capability for AFSOC's broader transformation for strategic competition," - Brig. Gen. Justin Hoffman, Director of Strategic Plans, Programs and Requirements for Air Force Special Operations Command. Additionally, through the STRATFI program, Shield AI will start integration of Hivemind™ onto a commercial eVTOL aircraft – Beta Technologies' ALIA, an Air Force Agility Prime platform. Integration will be in simulation to build the foundation for a follow-on full platform integration. Shield AI's Hivemind™ is an autonomy and artificial intelligence stack for military and commercial aircraft, designed from the ground up to be multi-role, multi-vehicle. On teams of aircraft, Hivemind™ enables full autonomy and is designed to run fully on the edge in high threat, GPS and communication degraded environments. It uses state-of-the-art path-planning, mapping, state-estimation, and computer vision algorithms, combined with reinforcement learning and simulations, to train unmanned systems to execute a variety of missions – from infantry clearance operations to breaching integrated air defense systems with unmanned aircraft.

Global Crossing Airlines and OSM Aviation Academy Announce Pilot Direct Placement Training Partnership

Global Crossing Airlines | April 07, 2022

Global Crossing Airlines Group, Inc. and OSM Aviation Academy announce a new partnership which will give GlobalX access to a pipeline of pilot students planning to transition to the airline. The program, named XDirect™, will partner to develop a 2 year advanced training program that will place graduate pilots into GlobalX as First Officers who are line-ready for our Airbus A320 family fleet. The program graduates will have enhanced Airline industry training such as CRM (multi crew concept) and FAA Part 121 training philosophy and requirements. The program has been developed to allow new pilots to train the way that GlobalX does from day one in conjunction with the requirements of FAA commercial and ATP licenses, ensuring a consistent training transition. The partnership will allow GlobalX long term access to highly qualified pilots when they reach the minimum required ATP hours, after successfully completing their Commercial and Instructors Certificates. OSM Aviation Academy students will progress through the OSM Cadet Pilot program and continue to tailor their experience to the needs of a narrowbody aircraft pilot. Highlights of the training program include ATPL ready airline pilots, Fast Track program to GlobalX, Multi-year cooperation agreement between OSM Aviation Academy and GlobalX. Core to the program is a scholarship program that will help to encourage women and others who would not typically be able to become a commercial pilot. GlobalX and OSM intend to train up to fifteen First Officer Candidates in the first year of the program, twenty in the second, and then more than thirty each subsequent year of the program. OSM operates a similar program with Norse Atlantic Airways in Norway. The program takes 12 months to earn all your flight certificates and ratings including, private pilot, ATP advanced theory, instrument rating, commercial single, and commercial multi engine, CFI, CFI-I, and UPRT. After the first 12 months, the cadet pilot will join OSM Aviation as a flight instructor until reaching the ATP minimum required hours where they will then transfer to GlobalX to complete the ATP/CTP, and A320 Type Rating. The cadet pilot will join GlobalX as a first officer. “OSM Aviation Academy is a world class academy for developing top-notch airline pilots, making them the perfect match as we continue to grow our fleet.” Juan Nunez, COO and Director of Operations (119) of GlobalX “With this unique agreement we’ve shaped the future of the aviation industry, making flight training more attainable. At the same time producing the top airline ready pilots who meet the high standards set forth by GlobalX Airlines. After getting to know the culture at GlobalX it made the decision to create this partnership between OSM Aviation Academy and GlobalX a must,” Antonio Tur, CEO and Managing Director of OSM Aviation Academy the Americas, said in a statement. About Global Crossing Airlines GlobalX is a US 121 domestic flag and supplemental airline flying the Airbus A320 family aircraft. GlobalX flies as an ACMI and charter airline serving the US, Caribbean, and Latin American markets. About OSM Aviation Academy OSM Aviation Academy has trained and educated pilots since 1963 and is shaping the future of the aviation by providing an excellent education for next generation of pilots.
