Valmont Industries Gains Nationwide Drone Waiver from FAA
Valmont Industries, Inc., a global leader that provides vital infrastructure and advances agricultural productivity while driving innovation through technology, is pleased to announce that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted the company a nationwide Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) waiver. The BVLOS waiver gives Valmont the ability to fly their multi-hour capable unmanned drones for commercial inspections of utility lines across the nation at a moment’s notice, eliminating the need to wait for geographic approval from the FAA. In addition to the removal of the geographic restriction, the entire diverse fleet of Valmont’s unmanned aerial systems were included. nThis nationwide waiver goes hand in hand with the primary goal of Valmont providing our customers more efficient and timely service through technology,” says Angi Chamberlain, vice president UAS Technology Services for Valmont. “Using drone technology allows us to reduce costs and provide an improved alternative to manned aviation.

Using drone technology allows Valmont to collect high-resolution images and infrastructure performance data safely and quickly. It also opens the door to future waivers as the company moves toward a completely autonomous solution.

Artemis Aerospace unveils some of the best upcycling ideas for aircraft parts

Recycling aircraft parts isn't a new concept in the aviation industry and, for many years, refurbishing parts to fit on other aircraft or repurposing them to produce different products, such as circuit boards, has been the industry standard. In fact, according to AFRA (Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association), it is estimated that around 80% to 85% of aircraft parts are recycled when an aircraft reaches retirement. However, new and alternative ideas for reusing aircraft parts are becoming more commonplace. Homeware collections Airbus and Lufthansa are among some of the companies breathing new life into aircraft parts by creating designer furniture and homeware collections for modern living. The project called A Piece of Sky, which was supported by Airbus and its Airbus BizLab initiative, was the first to start transforming the manufacturer's parts into furniture. These include armchairs, coffee tables and lamps created from things such as cabin windows and test flight storage data modules. They have also created Airbus branded surfboards out of recycled carbon. In October 2020, Lufthansa launched its Upcycling Collection 2.0 – a range of homeware products made from retired aircraft parts. The collection features furniture, sculptures and accessories built with parts from a decommissioned A320. Key products include a flying coffee table created from landing flaps and a wall bar formed from an aeroplane window mounted onto a wooden box. From washers, fasteners and rivets to hinges, grommets and seals, parts can be repurposed quickly and easily by simply adding some ribbon or coloured string. Strike a pose on a private jet 'selfie set' Ever wanted to fly by private jet? It might not be quite the same thing, but for a little bit of light-hearted fun, take a trip to the Selfie Factory at the O2 in London, where you can spend the day make-believing you are living the good life. BNDES finances Embraer's aircraft production for export

The Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved financing to Embraer S.A. (B3: EMBR3, NYSE: ERJ) for producing and exporting commercial aircraft manufactured by the company. The operation, in the order of R$ 2.2 billion (US$ 400 million), will be carried out through the BNDES Exim Pre-shipment, a direct bank credit line to produce national goods destined for export. BNDES operation reinforces the US$ 650 million revolving credit funding recently announced by Embraer with a foreign financial institutions group. The financing consummation is subject, among others, to the fulfillment of previous conditions established by BNDES and the execution of the respective contract. "Credit operations are important for the resumption of aircraft production by Embraer at pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels and reinforce the strategic partnership between BNDES and Embraer started in 1997, consolidating BNDES support to the aeronautical industry and the export of Brazilian aircraft," Bruno Aranha, director of BNDES. "The longevity of the partnership between Embraer and BNDES illustrates the strength of this relationship that stimulates Brazilian exports and benefits society. Together with other actions that we are carrying out with Brazilian and international financial institutions, this operation reinforces our credibility for access to financial resources that will contribute to executing our growth plan," said Antonio Carlos Garcia, CFO of Embraer. Vita Rescue System Completes U.S. Army Developmental Flight Testing

The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) completed developmental flight testing on the Vita Rescue System – Litter Attachment (VRS-LA) for the Product Director (PD) MEDEVAC. The VRS-LA is an anti-rotational device that can be used to increase the effectiveness and safety of MEDEVAC hoist missions. The VRS-LA was tested on both the SKEDCO Basic Rescue System and the Stokes Rescue Litter. Testing was conducted to ensure the device would perform in various operational environments. Completion of the army flight and environmental testing is an important milestone for Vita Inclinata as it moves through the airworthiness certification process. The flight-testing process put the VRS LA through a series of rigorous field tests designed to fully explore the technology's capability. Prior to flight testing, the VRS underwent extensive environmental testing designed to ensure that the system will function under even the most extreme conditions. Up next, for the VRS-LA is the user-evaluation phase. During this phase, the system will be used by soldiers in the field with the express purpose of collecting user feedback and ensuring mission effectiveness. Vita is proud to have completed developmental flight testing and looks forward to continuing our work with the Army testing team at USAARL to ensure this life-saving technology can achieve the mission of bringing soldiers home every time.

JOHNSON MATTHEY AND HONEYWELL PARTNER TO ADVANCE LOWER CARBON HYDROGEN SOLUTIONS

Honeywell and Johnson Matthey (JM), today announced they will work together to deploy low carbon1 hydrogen solutions. The companies will offer JM's innovative LCH™ technology, coupled with Honeywell's leading carbon capture technology to produce lower carbon intensity hydrogen (blue hydrogen) at scale. Ready to be deployed today, this offering will provide project developers a new option for producing clean hydrogen. The demand for hydrogen solutions is on the rise with public policies and funding mechanisms being put in place to encourage investment. An example is the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which commits billions in production tax incentives for clean hydrogen producers. With the evolving legislative environment, an integrated solution was identified with low process carbon intensity as a key target. According to JM- Honeywell UOP calculations, the result is a solution which will enable direct process emissions to be less than 0.1 kgCO2/kgH2 by capturing carbon rates above 99%2. This provides eligibility for production tax credits within the IRA, meaning projects can access the support they need to be deployed rapidly. This relationship also builds on the collaboration recently announced at the European Refining Technology Conference in Berlin, where JM is integrating differentiated Honeywell UOP technologies into its CLEANPACE™ offering for decarbonising existing synthesis (syngas) gas plants. Honeywell's advanced solvent carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and hydrogen solutions allow for CO2 to be captured, transported, and stored at a lower cost through greater efficiency, while allowing for smaller equipment and lower capital operational expenses needed to run the plant compared to existing technologies3. Alberto Giovanzana, Chief Commerical Officer of Catalyst Technologies at Johnson Matthey said: "By joining complementary technology elements, we will provide customers with a cost-effective approach that will enable meaningful reductions in emissions compared to conventional technology.
