NASA TV to Cover SpaceX Cargo Dragon Departure from Space Station

NASA | August 12, 2022

A SpaceX Dragon cargo resupply spacecraft returning science to Earth for NASA is set to depart the International Space Station on Thursday, Aug. 18. NASA will provide coverage of Dragon's undocking and departure on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency's website beginning at 10:45 a.m. EDT. Watch online at: Ground controllers at SpaceX in Hawthorne, California, will send commands at 11:05 a.m. for Dragon to undock from the forward port of the station's Harmony module and fire its thrusters to move a safe distance away from the station. Controllers will command a deorbit burn the following day. After re-entering Earth's atmosphere, the spacecraft will make a parachute-assisted splashdown off the coast of Florida. NASA TV will not broadcast the splashdown, and updates will be posted on the agency's space station blog. Dragon will carry back to Earth more than 4,000 pounds of supplies and scientific experiments that were designed to take advantage of the space station's microgravity environment. Splashing down off the coast of Florida enables quick transportation of the experiments to NASA's Space Station Processing Facility at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, allowing researchers to collect data with minimal sample exposure to Earth's gravity.

Velontra Contracts with Venus Aerospace to Deliver a Propulsion System Enabling Airflights Around the Globe in One Hour

Venus Aerospace | September 01, 2022

Cincinnati/Dayton-based Velontra has partnered with Venus Aerospace in Houston, Texas, to develop a revolutionary propulsion system. Velontra's after-burner system will enable Venus' hypersonic aircraft to take off from any airport in the world where it will travel to any destination on Earth in about one hour. "This is an exciting relationship,"Our after-burner system rounds out Venus' quest to use their rocket engine to travel at the hypersonic speed of Mach 9 (nine times the speed of sound) as it travels along the edge of the Earth's atmosphere." Velontra CEO Robert Keane III Keane also says that this contract with Venus Aerospace is a validation of the market need for the Velontra propulsion system that can carry passengers quickly and efficiently around the globe. Their air-breathing propulsion system is up to six times more fuel efficient than any rocket and uses oxygen from the air which creates thousands of pounds of additional payload capacity. Velontra's development process is also quick and more economical than most traditional aerospace and defense contractors. The Venus Aerospace "Stargazer" is designed as an unusually sleek aircraft, proposed to be 100 feet wide by 150 feet long. It is expected to weigh around 150,000 pounds and accommodate up to 12 passengers. It is the brainchild of Venus founders and noted space engineers Sarah "Sassie" Duggleby and her husband, Dr. Andrew Duggleby. "We are excited to partner with Velontra; the extra performance they can bring to our hypersonic vehicles is unmatched. Rob and Joel bring incredible experience, and we are excited to see more technologists and entrepreneurs enter the deep-tech venture arena. We (the U.S.) need more shots on goal, and innovation happens by doing. Velontra is a prime example of this," says Dr. Andrew Duggleby, chief technology officer and co-founder of Venus Aerospace. "While Venus started their quest slightly before us, this relationship enables us to develop our flight testing faster than originally expected," reveals Keane. The timing couldn't be more perfect. Velontra has been accepted into the latest cohort of the prestigious Y-Combinator, an American technology and startup accelerator in the Silicon Valley. Among its graduates are such household names as Door Dash, Airbnb, Uber and Instacart. Its technology graduates include Momentus and Boomer Supersonic."Y-Combinator only admits just 1.5% to 2% of applicants and even fewer in the aerospace industry," says Keane. "This investment achievement and our cutting-edge work with Venus Aerospace has created a path to groundbreaking success.""All of us at Velontra see this as a synergistic relationship with Venus where we can combine our unique technologies to develop something the world has never seen before," says Joel Darin, Velontra's chief technology officer.

Guitar Center Partners with Southwest Airlines to Surprise Passengers with Ukuleles and In-Flight Lessons

Southwest Airlines | September 19, 2022

Guitar Center, the world's largest musical instrument retailer, surprised passengers on Southwest Airlines® from Long Beach to Honolulu, with the first-ever in-flight ukulele class by Guitar Center on Friday, September 16. Above the clouds, passengers onboard the Boeing 737-800 aircraft all received a Mitchell MU40 Soprano ukulele, a Road Runner carrying case and a unique lesson in the sky. Best-in-class Guitar Center Lessons instructors taught passengers how easy it is to learn to play the ukulele, one of Hawaii's happiest and most familiar instruments – so easy, passengers were able to learn to play the song "Hello, Aloha. How are you?" during the flight. Passengers on board kicked off their weekend travels flying across the Pacific Ocean, unified, one chord at a time, with a sweet-sounding surprise, and an unforgettable travel day to Honolulu. Alexandra Windsor, educational affairs specialist for Guitar Center Lessons, and Ryan Miyashiro and Ryan Imata, Guitar Center instructors at Guitar Center's Pearl City store, led passengers in a group lesson to kick off their travel to the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. "I've taught students through Guitar Center Lessons since 2014, but never in an airplane. It was inspiring to see how quickly passengers of all ages picked up the ukulele – many with no musical background. The ukulele is the perfect instrument for beginners, and it shows just how fun and easy learning something new can be," said Windsor. "Our Customers anticipate warm Southwest Hospitality throughout their journeys with us, and these Surprise and Delight events are a unique way to create memorable experiences ,Today's celebration of Hawaiian culture and Southwest Hospitality underscore our everyday commitment to serve and celebrate the spirit of Aloha."
