ZEVA Successfully Completes Historic First Test Flight

ZEVA | January 15, 2022

AI Blog
ZEVA, a pioneer in zero-emission electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft transportation, successfully achieved its first untethered, powered, controlled flight test for its full-scale ZEVA ZERO flying wing airframe utilizing its eight zero-emission electric motor-driven propellers. The major milestone for the Tacoma-based startup was captured in this new video in rural Pierce County, Washington, on Sunday, January 9th, 2022 as part of its rigorous test program to achieve FAA airworthiness certification.

The uncrewed ZEVA demonstration aircraft completed four flights, totaling more than four minutes of controlled hovering, simulated taxiing maneuvers at slow speeds, and limited vertical climb maneuvers. Its compact airframe is designed for a single pilot and is small enough to fit in a standard automobile parking space. The vehicle is projected to cruise at speeds of up to 160 mph with a range of up to 50 miles, optimizing point-to-point travel.

“This is a huge inflection point for ZEVA as we join an exclusive set of proven flying eVTOL platforms, and a testament to the relentless hard work and ingenuity of our entire team over the past two and half years, We are dissecting our learnings from our critical first taxiing flight, which is a direct result of the support we’ve received from our investors and community, leading us to bring in additional talent to spearhead this historic moment. We are eager to continue to our next stage of hover flight testing on our road to certification and eventual autonomous flight allowing anyone, not just pilots, to access zero-emission point-to-point travel.”

- Stephen Tibbitts, CEO and Chairman of ZEVA.

ZEVA experienced tremendous growth this year, with the addition of Gus Meyer as flight control engineer and several other key hires. The team completed more than 50 successful tethered flights, showcased the ZEVA ZERO aircraft at the Dubai Air Show in November, and was awarded a grant by Washington’s Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) to work with Washington State University on ZEVA Aero’s aerodynamic configurations to optimize the vehicle’s thrust and controls. ZEVA has also worked with NASA in conjunction with its Urban Air Mobility Grand Challenge.

ZEVA will continue hover flight tests and advance to transition flight testing this spring to fine-tune the unique Superman-like trajectory of the aircraft design. The patent-pending design is expected to be available for pre-order for consumers for a $5,000 deposit as early as spring of this year, with an eventual price tag for the first production units estimated at under $250,000.

Private Jet Company Volato Expands and Evolves Offering with Gulfstream G280 Fleet Agreement

Volato | September 17, 2022

Volato, the most efficient way to experience a luxury private jet, today announced a new relationship with Gulfstream and a fleet order of Gulfstream G280 aircraft. With four on firm order, the aircraft will add significant capability to Volato's existing fleet of HondaJet Elites. This expansion evolves Volato's business model as they look to service a greater share of the private aviation market. Volato will be the first company to fractionalize the Gulfstream G280, preselling fractions in multiples of eighths, and will take delivery of its first G280 aircraft in early 2024.The ten-seat configured Gulfstream G280 brings the unique benefits of Volato's program to the super-mid cabin fractional customer: fly as little or as much as you like, plus, earn revenue every time your aircraft flies a live mission, evolving their business model from The most efficient way to fly luxury private with four or fewer passengers to The most efficient, friendly and rewarding way to experience a luxury private jet. "When we launched Volato, our strategy was to initially target the largest segment of the market that was not being directly addressed: short haul flights with only a few passengers,From listening to our customers' needs and recognizing that our innovative business model is not just limited to light jets, we are excited to expand our model to larger aircraft so that HondaJet owners can fly their edge case missions that are farther or with more passengers, while welcoming a new category of luxury private jet customer to Volato's superior experience." AIR and NATA Announce First-Ever SAF Delivery Receipt for Business Aviation

NATA | August 22, 2022

Today, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) in partnership with 4AIR announced the release of a first-ever Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) receipt for business aviation. The SAF Delivery Receipt allows fixed-base operators (FBOs) to provide industry-requested, standardized documentation to business aircraft operators about their uplift of SAF. Aircraft operators can use the new receipt both for certification by 4AIR and others of their efforts to fight climate change, and for compliance with Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) goals. At present, the largest emissions reductions are enabled by using SAF, but operators currently are receiving different documentation depending on their supplier. Moreover, there is no way to easily link the sustainability documentation to the “last mile uplift” from the FBO to the operator.“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is today’s most accessible way to not just offset but actually reduce carbon emissions that contribute to climate change,” said 4AIR President Kennedy Ricci. “However, many operators were struggling to get the necessary information to report on their use of SAF. Our collaboration with NATA provides a standardized paper trail for everyone in the industry to know what to look for. It both proves and highlights the use of SAF, which will encourage its wider adoption.” Documenting the feedstock used with a particular uplift is vital to know the carbon intensity of the fuel. Similarly, an operator needs to know the blend of the fuel uplifted to calculate the actual emissions reduced. The first standardized proof of purchase will make operators more aware of the level of sustainability of the SAF they have uplifted. The documentation – like a W2 for sustainability – allows them to document their use for reporting. This will drive more uplift of SAF or encourage operators to seek it out to arrive or depart from a location where it is available to meet their sustainability goals or enhance their ESG efforts. “This is another example of the business aviation industry’s efforts to show that, while carbon and emissions offsets are a critical starting point, we must encourage adoption of SAF and other carbon-reducing technologies wherever available,NATA President and CEO Timothy Obitts. “This formal documentation of the use of SAF fulfills an important industry need and provides a pathway for sustainability to become standard operating procedure throughout business aviation.” NATA President and CEO Timothy Obitts Highlights: Standardized Record Allows FBOs to Easily Share Key Information with Uplifters of SAF Validates Use of SAF for Compliance with ESG Goals Unlocks an Organization’s Ability to Make the Most of SAF Utilization, Enhances Awareness as a Tool to Drive Greater Adoption About the National Air Transportation Association The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has been the voice of aviation business for more than 80 years. Representing nearly 3,700 aviation business service providers, NATA is the leading national trade association representing the business interests of general aviation service companies on legislative and regulatory matters at the federal level, while also providing education, services, and benefits to our members to help ensure their long-term economic success. NATA is a founding member of the Business Aviation Coalition for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and the Council on Sustainable Fuels Accountability (CoSAFA), of which NATA President and CEO Timothy Obitts serves as chairman of the Steering Committee and as board chairman, respectively. For more information, visit https://www.nata.aero. About 4AIR 4AIR is an industry pioneer offering sustainability solutions beyond just simple carbon neutrality. Its industry-first framework seeks to address climate impacts of all types and provides a simplified and verifiable path for private aviation industry participants to achieve meaningful aircraft emissions counteraction and reduction. The 4AIR framework offers four levels, each with specific, science-based goals, independently verified results and progressively greater impacts on sustainability that make it easy for private aviation users to pursue sustainability through access to carbon markets, use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, support for new technologies and other strategies.
