A competitive airline sector is vital to meet the needs of consumers and the economy more broadly, especially for a large country as geographically dispersed as Australia. Rivalry between airlines can deliver more routes, a greater choice of products, cheaper airfares, more reliable services and better customer service. On many of these measures, international air passenger services to and from Australia generally delivered improved outcomes in the years leading up to the pandemic.
