Bahrain on the Food Security Index 2013

The agricultural sector has attracted rising concern and development focus due to the uncertainty triggered by the supply shocks experienced globally in the last five years and the ever-increasing price index for food items. Bahrain faces its unique challenges in this domain mainly as a result of a combination of resource-related factors that limit production, including land scarcity, water scarcity and climate conditions. The growing population and increasing urbanization have also put an upward pressure on demand that has created an opportunity not yet fully recognized by the private sector. While overall employment in this field has somewhat decreased, fishing and aquaculture have recently emerged as booming and lucrative fields.
