Air travel is essential to the United Kingdom’s economy and to our continued prosperity. In the last 30 years there has been a five-fold increase in air travel. And it has opened up opportunities that for many simply did not exist before; half the population flies at least once a year, and many fly far more often than that.

Companies in aviation are facing a time of major transformation. While altered demand patterns trigger the need to right-size capacity and innovate the service portfolio, COVID-19 further seriously jeopardizes economies around the globe. It has changed social interaction and caused a myriad of bankruptcies.

The airline flight deck is one of the most coveted workplaces, as can be attested to by the more than 100,000 pilots in the United States and Canada who work hard and sacrifice to earn a seat at the controls of a transport category airline aircraft. However, despite the attractiveness of an airline pilot career, the flight deck environment is very industrial in nature and can be the source of serious injuries and longterm health issues. As such, it needs protections for pilots that are commonly found in other industries. This white paper explores the various types of health and safety risks found on the flight deck and in the aircraft cabin and provides recommendations on ways to address identified inadequacies across a wide range of topics and health threats. These inadequacies need to be addressed by federal agencies charged with establishment and enforcement of rules and policies designed to protect airline pilots while carrying out their duties at work.

This report outlines a holistic view of pathways to a sustainable aviation ecosystem, focusing on low-net-carbon aircraft energy carriers (fuels), airport ecosystems (airports and bases), and developments in sustainable aircraft components (aircraft). Taking this holistic ecosystem perspective, we identify critical components that contribute to sustainable energy solutions necessary to achieve deep decarbonization of the aviation industry, as well as the integrated energy system interfaces that must be comprehensively understood, planned for, and realized. Further, we outline necessary R&D needs to achieve sustainability across the aviation ecosystem, including advancing breakthrough innovations to rapidly achieve scalable solutions, with attention to their cross-sectoral dependencies and implications.
