Sustainable Air Fuels (SAF) offers a non-conventional (fossil-derived) aviation fuel. Airlines may use any SAF that meets the technical certification criteria, however those certifications do not guarantee sustainability; they only describe the physical properties of the fuel itself. There are multiple reasons that an airline should seek to use SAF that has also been certified sustainable as part of a broader decarbonisation process.There is growing optimism in some corners of the industry, however, that hydrogen may provide a potential answer. The lightest and most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen offers nearly three times the specific energy of gasoline.
